The Faraway East: of Dreams and Pursuits is a very special art exhibition showcasing the works of French traveling artists who came to and lived in Indochina in the past, and how they constructed their own unique lenses to reflect upon the land and people here.
The exhibition includes artists such as Victor Tardieu, Joseph Inguimberty, Alix Aymé, all belonging to the Indochina Fine Arts School (1924-1945).
According to Ace Lê, the Executive Director of Sotheby’s Vietnam market, he shared: “Their artistic journey carries within it the dreams, aspirations, and perspectives of each individual and the collective, reflecting the Western influence on the flow of Vietnamese art, and vice versa.”
It is an indescribably emotional and uplifting feeling to see Vietnamese landmarks sketched with a distinctly French touch, making the land appear incredibly distinct.
